CONTINOUS CLOSURE OF WORSHIP CENTRES AMIDST COVID-19

Fada Jude Ofuani cmf

Fada Jude Ofuani cmf
  • Naturally, when something extraordinary happens to us, we return to our root, we return to our basis, we return to God. Coronavirus has made death a reality to us; it drove home the message that we are vulnerable to death. Whether in life or in death, we belong to God. There is no gain saying the fact that the world is ravaged by anger; everyone is worried, anxious and afraid. At a point, there was that fear of “Have I been contaminated by this very pandemic Covid-19 or have I contaminated others with it?” At some other point, when one sneezes or coughs, fear grips him or her; that fear of invisible symptoms of the virus. In all these, we must stop worrying and start trusting. Yes, start trusting in God, start loving and start living positively.

More than these worries, we are above all faced with the worries of worship. We are not able to go to Church; even the government of Lagos and Ogun States had to revise their decisions on opening of Churches and Mosque due to fear of the pandemic. Ironically, State Houses of Assemblies all over the country, Federal House of Representatives and the Senate hold their sessions for long hours and life is moving as usual in various cities, towns, villages of the world and the country. In all these, worship centres that meet within 1hr 30mins or 2hrs at most are not allowed to open. This has kept so many who wished to return to normal worshipping together very worried. More so, several worst hit countries have resumed public worship also.

When the government announced the date for opening of worship centres, there was jubilation. Friends called, showing their excitement that once again, they can come together to worship, yes, maintaining social distance. They don’t mind even if government should say worship can take place within 30mins, they just wanted to return to Church. Some told me they were already practicing new dancing steps in thanksgiving to God on their first day in church after months of ban on public worship. In the midst of the excitement, Boom! The news shattered their joys, worship centres should remain under lock and keys but other life’s activities should move on. Probably, coronavirus visits worship centres and hates shopping malls, markets, banks, offices, etc. An undeniable reality is this:

Tensions are eased, depressions are reduced, hope is restored and relieve is given to troubled and fearful hearts when the people of God come together to worship, even with social distance maintained. Why? The Church is a healing place. The very fact of gathering together restores hope to hopeless hearts.

In all these friends, even if we are not able to go to Church, even if we are not able to receive the Lord in the Eucharist, let us continue to worship in spirit and in truth, praying together, reading the scriptures, sharing the Word and the faith together at home. They can only close Church buildings, but they cannot close the Church (You and I). Therefore, this period is a reminder for us that the home is the domestic Church and parents are prayer leaders. But more to this, it is a time of witnessing, a time of standing for the truth, the truth that we must learn to live with covid-19, because according to experts, it would not live our world very soon. So, places of worhsip would not be locked forever, just as people go about their daily activities each day with the consciousness of the reality of this pandemic, in the same way, people should be free to express their worship to God the best way to wish, also with the consciousness of the reality of the pandemic. Those who wish to worship in Churches should be allowed, and those who wish to worship at home should also continue.

Life is not how humans see it, but how God sees it. Let us look at this pandemic with the eyes of God not with the naked eyes of humans. So we ask ourselves, what is God trying to teach us?

How Covid-19 Is Affecting Real Estate Business

By Ngozi Asoya (Larryhappiday)

If you’re NOT doing real estate, you ain’t in business.

Real estate is diversified. Covid-19 the terror sickness of 2020 has shrunk some sections of the business but others have continued to grow slightly. Overall, it is a mixed bag.

The Many Strands of Real Estate

When we talk real estate, we are referring to the following businesses:
1. Private homes
2. Residential rented apartments
3. Commercial rented property
4. Building and construction
5. Luxury Apartments
6. Rental Tourism accommodation
7. Investments in any or all of the above
8. Agency
9. Marketing & sales
10. Seasonal property rental
11. Realtors training like the one provided by RealtorPro
12. Surveys
13. Urban Development
14. Architecture & Designing
15. Financing
16. Building Materials manufacturing
17. Building materials distribution and sales

Image generated from Entity Explorer

Each of these boasts of sublets and branches. An understanding of the effect of Covid-19 pandemic on real estate will have to touch each of these segments before a holistic assessment can be made.

PRIVATE HOMES.

This can be discussed under urban homes and rural homes. The need for comfortable and conducive homes have never been more acute. Whereas, home and office lives were hitherto split, they are converging in an accelerated manner. Home construction and equipment especially with renovations are high. It has become necessary to carve out conducive work spaces in most urban homes. Furthermore, most urban homes are reliant on imported materials mostly from Asia and Europe. The accessories market has as channels Italy, Turkey, UAE, India and China. With the Lockdown of the manufacturing sectors in these countries orders are hanging in the air. This has created openings for local improvisation. Purchasing power issues have significant effect on rural homes acquisition and rental.

RESIDENTIAL RENTED APARTMENTS

Rental property owners are scratching their heads and wondering when tenants would resume and paying their rents. The worst hit are the short let apartments that rely on weekly, daily or monthly rents. There are difficulty in getting new tenants and in collecting rents from existing tenants, who are mostly unskilled daily paid workers.

COMMERCIAL RENTED PROPERTY

Property owners in this category are mostly bulk rent collectors. That means they give out their premises to users who pay before use. Commercial properties mostly charged per annum and would not be too pressed because most tenants would still have subsisting rents paid over one year. Those who were entering this sector before the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown began would be hard put to explain their hard luck as borrowing obligations may continue unabated and anticipated inflows may be stymied.

LUXURY APARTMENTS

Luxury apartments are like commercial property. The difference being that these apartments are often occupied by mobile expats who took off enmass during the onset of lockdown in March and early April. Many luxury estates are lying fallow although some had been paid for before the onset of Covid-19.

BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION

Building and construction is one of the worst hit. This sector relies on daily paid workers who have been ensconced in their homes restricted by government orders to lockdown and to observe no close social proximity measures. Contractors are then sequestered with projects that they are not executing and the risk of cost creeps.

RENTAL TOURISM PROPERTIES

Owners and builders in this category are still considering where the uppercut that left them sprawling came from. Hotels, event centres, motels, and clubs are in this category. Whereas they are already devastated enough with lost revenues due to complete lockdown of their facilities, consumables and other credit facilities are falling due. Some may expire before the total easing of restrictions. New property owners or those who had commenced construction have huge liabilities in terms of altered profitability questions and projections as well cost and project creeps.

INVESTMENTS

For those who are short-term investors, not much may be lost. However those huge short-term investors who have already made commitments have something else coming. If they had obtained facilities from commercial lenders at commercial rates, there will be a lot of shillying and shallying to do.

AGENCY

Millions of small agents occupy the space between renters and owners all over the world. With no significant fresh investment flowing into the economy, this is a complete lull. Collecting due rents are problematic and getting new tenants neigh impossible. Many in his sector are literally starving. Specialisation in this category include: agents specializing in every sector of the industry such brokerage, management, rental etc.

MARKETING & SALES

This can be divided into three segments: land, built-up properties, creatives supporting the selling process. In the last category are real estate digital advert creators, print media including banners and newspapers and graphic experts providing marketing paraphernalia. There is gross lull in the acquisition of landed property but smart investors are already buying heavily because this is one of the most likely to recover quickly. Buyers also have immense negotiating powers right now and could strike smart deals if they have experienced realtors to work with. Furthermore, most people of influence and wide networth are likely to flood this sector soon as many will seek to trade their social assets for a new life. (This is one area where RealtorPro excels). Recently out of job workers and high networth paid employees should explore this option of maintaining the lifestyle they have already built over the years.

SEASONAL PROPERTY RENTAL

Entertainment and tourism assets have seasonal patrons who keep them alive especially through the summer. Bulk orders are being cancelled leaving supply chain providers stranded. Although this is low volume activity, it compares in turnover with most other segments. Activities here include: resort town sourcing, maintenance,  redevelopment and financing.

REALTOR TRAINING

This is  an urgent need for new realtors in the light of increasing awareness of the need to own private and commercial properties. Besides, given the changing landscape of real estate business, practising realtors are seeking more elevated information products that will give them the edge and stand them out from the crowd. Real estate training for sellers, managers and even buyers are being developed. Talk to RealtorPro for more.

ARCHITECTURE

This is the most fecund season for creatives. Being the moment when property owners are renovating or planning their new projects, architects will find this season full of activities. What do architects do?

FINANCE

Institutions engaged in funding real estate are having two problems on their necks: defaults and idle funds. There are a lot of idle resources looking for users without any borrowers. Similarly, those who borrowed are unable to pay because there are no economic activities to fund repayments. So they are battling with insurance issues, repayment issues and idle funds. Nothing ails a lender like having resources that no one is taking.  Other financial transactions handled include brokerage, lending, risk analysis, construction and mortgage. Everyone in the building industry chain requires one form of credit or another.

MANUFACTURERS

There a multiplicity of manufacturers in this segment. For instance, we have  interior and exterior materials manufacture. They include facade, wall, glass, aluminium, steel, wood, brick, stone, iron, etc.  Most building products don’t have short expiry dates so they do not have much to worry about that. However, finances tied to materials procurement, staff salaries, even though they aren’t working and overflowing inventories are their major concerns.

LAWYERS

Some of the activities done by lawyers in the property business

Property law encompasses conveyancing, inheritance, investigation, inspection, contract, attorney services, legal advise, land purchase etc. I have client who just finished paying for his property. He went through his lawyers and I’m looking forward to meeting him person during his allocation which comes up in a few days time. That’s what property lawyers can do. Take away the fears of property investment by scrutinizing offers and supervising purchase.

In conclusion, it is clear that there are many areas where people can apply their skills and experiences in the real estate sector. They only need guidance.

How Covid-19 Breaks our Dreams

Fada Jude Ofuani cmf

By Fada Jude Ofuani, cmf

At the beginning of 2020, we all had dreams for the year, we made plans and made resolutions, invariably we are all dreamers and rightly so. But as things and life unfolded in the cause of the year, the world was hit with the advent of the invisible coronovirus. At that point all our aspirations appeared to become “Broken Dreams.”

You must look at your dreams again

This reminds me of a post I once saw on the social media that read thus: “Dear God, please remove 2020 from my year because I didn’t use it.” Such a post sounds interesting and laughable too, but more than that, it explains the level of frustration a lot of persons are passing through with this period of lockdown occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic. The despondency is such that to a larger extent, dreams about weddings, funerals, anniversaries, vacations, graduations, ordinations and other occasions are postponed. In fact, if it were possible to postpone birthdays, people would not mind to do that.

In life, we have dreamt many dreams and in the course of time, we have seen many of these shattered, destroyed and even crushed. We are justifiably angry, because we have all literally become “Broken Dreamers.”

The anger increases with every passing day because we don’t know what the future holds for us and for our cherished dreams. For instance, so many had hoped that this year, they would graduate from school. WASCE and NECO candidates wished they had written their exams before the outbreak, but the reverse seems to be the case. Most young ladies wished that by now they would have added “Mrs” as a title to their names and young men felt they would have left the league of bachelors. So, you get so many angry spinsters and bachelors everywhere. Friends, we are all dreamers, but amidst this pandemic, we see our dreams broken, we see our dreams crushed, we see our dreams destroyed and answers are not given to our situations.

After the death of Jesus, the dreams of his disciples and apostles were shattered, crushed and destroyed, but when Jesus rose from the dead, hope was restored, life returned for the early Christians who were already helpless and hopeless amidst fears. They stood in the tomb to see the evidence of the risen Lord; but Jesus didn’t want them to remain in the tomb wondering and contemplating forever. The Lord asked them to go to Galilee, where they would meet Him. At Galilee their dreams were reborn; Galilee if you like is the cradle of their fresh dreams and hopes. When you return to the cradle, there you would witness simplicity of life and rising hope. So, we do not really need to be angered by all these, it is simply a call to live a life of simplicity.

So my friends, Covid-19, the lockdown and quarantine have led us to our Galilee. Now is the time to dream again; but more than that, it is a time to live a simple but childlike life. Now is the time to return to our Galilee. How do we do that?

By living simple lifestyles again. Therefore, never sacrifice your dreams and hopes on the altar of anger necessitated by this pandemic. Live out your dreams. Go ahead with your weddings, your anniversaries, your birthdays, your ordinations and funerals of your loved ones in a very simple way. Do not use your own hand to crush your dreams by mere fleeting pleasures and flamboyances.

You must look at your dreams again; begin to review them especially as the lockdown begins to ease all over the country and the world at large. Remember what God has done in the past and keep hoping.

Dear friends, yes, the crushed, broken dreams seem to be our story that has generated too much anger in us, but because Jesus rose and gave hope to the Apostles, there was restoration in their broken dreams. When we return to the cradle of our dreams, the dreams would rise up and instead of getting our dreams crushed by anger, we would crush anger itself and live with high hopes of dreams being fulfilled even in the middle of the year 2020. Graduations would take place again, schools would resume again, anniversaries, ordinations, vacations would take place again because the Lord is with us as He promised, always even to the end of time. Yes, the Lord is with us, but we hardly notice Him. He is indeed the Lord and He has power to do whatever He wills and would always renew your broken dreams and because our hope is in the Lord, we will not be disappointed.

GOD WHERE ARE YOU?

– By Fada Jude Ofuani, cmf

In the face of the Covid-19 blight, an existential fear has led to panic globally. The world is asking a philosophical question: “God, where are you?” Rev. Fada Jude Ofuani, in this article argues that He’s in the midst of the Covid-19 Pandemic, working out every thing for man’s good.– Editor

It is over two months now we last gathered as a Church to pray together because of the effects of this tiny but invisible virus called “Coronavirus.” For us living in Lagos, Ogun and the FCT, we don’t even know when it would end; we are almost counting three (3) months.

Some of my friends often call me or chat with me on the social media especially on Sundays and they would always say “Fada Jude, hope you prayed for us at Mass today since we couldn’t go to Church?” While some others would out of curiosity ask: “But Father, for crying out loud, why did God allow coronavirus to disturb our normal lives? Why did God allow Covid-19 to destroy our coming together as a Church to pray?” In order words, they are asking “God where are you?”

This question is an undeniable experience of anyone faced with difficulties, trials and tribulations and solutions don’t seem to be coming.

Look my friends, God always works for the good of those who love him (cf. Rom. 8:28), He always does, not sometimes but ALWAYS.

Look my friends, God always works for the good of those who love him (cf. Rom. 8:28), He always does, not sometimes but ALWAYS.
When something good happens, God is there because God wants to keep it good. Why? At such times, the enemy the devil can enter something good to destroy it, just as Jesus noted in the Parable of weeds, in which  He had said “An enemy has done this” (Matt. 13:28). The enemy came at night while everyone was asleep and sewed weeds among the wheat in the field. But in all, God would always enter to preserve its goodness to avoid it turning into bad or evil.

When something bad happens also, God is there in order for the bad things to bear fruits of goodness at the long run.

Asking the question “Where is God?” is like an unborn child in the womb asking the mother, “Mama, where are you?” When we ask “God where are you?” God would answer us like the mother of the unborn child. “Child, I am all around you, you cannot see me because you are inside my womb. You cannot see me because you live just inside of me and I give meaning to your existence right there. But do not worry, just trust, trust and keep trusting child because you are inside me secured, enclosed in my womb and all will be well.”

Asking the question “Where is God?” is like an unborn child in the womb asking the mother, “Mama, where are you?” When we ask “God where are you?”

Dear friends, God is always present in the storms of our lives; sometimes, the storms are too heavy for us to see through and behold God standing just in front of us. That is why he is called “Omni Present.” So, where is God? He is all over us, invisible to our human eyes.

When you ask the question again, just remember the air you are presently breathing free of charge. It is God who gives it to you. He is the one who makes your heart beat and He gives your body the necessary metabolisms to fight against all infections.

When you ask the question again, just remember the air you are presently breathing free of charge. It is God who gives it to you

Finally friends, remember that in God, we live and move and have our being (cf. Acts 17:28). Again you may ask, “God where are you?” and God says to you again and again, “My child, I am all around you, do not be afraid, search no further.”

How to Exorcise the Covid-19 Demon of Fear

By Ngozi Asoya (Larryhappiday)

Catholic priest, Rev. Jude Ofuani recently asked a very fundamental question concerning the most confounding issue of our time Covid-19 disease. In his article Defeating Covid-19 Demons, he had asked the question that is on every living soul’s lips: how do we confront the fears of Covid-19 pandemic? While reading that article, I found that I needed to talk more about this challenge because without answering that question satisfactorily, there looms another epidemic. The catastrophic epidemic of mental or humongous psychotic dimensions that our entire stock of global psychiatrists are not equipped to handle. How? There are currently one psychiatrist to 10,000 patients and 264 million depression sufferers globally before the pandemic. Here lies the need to drive in the black goat before darkness envelopes the land.

Is there a threat of Mental Illness?

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has already warned of an impending mental health explosion. In a recent release by the global health body, it was shown that our world is seating on a tinderbox of anxiety, depression and schizophrenia occasioned by the unprecedented health scare that accompanied the Covid-19 pandemic. This is contained in reports published in the middle of May 2020. It states: “the mental health and wellbeing of whole societies have been severely impacted by this (Covid-19) crisis and are a priority to be addressed urgently.”  So its safe to conclude that Father Jude Ofuani has a point about the rising sea of gloom threatening to eclipse mankind. This is because it is important to identify the fear and to name it before it assumes a life of its own swallowing the overwhelmed public in its destructive wake.

Identifying Covid-19 Fears

Having stated the above, I intend to further the discussion by the following steps:

  1. Classifying the fears that we fear
  2. Describing those fears and how they impact us as individuals in the shot and long run and
  3. Suggesting ways of tackling the fears fearlessly.

Classification of Covid-19 Related Fears

The fears that the pandemic engendered may be classified into the following broad groups:

  • Money Fears
  • Job / Career Fears
  • Loss of Social Status
  • Truncated or Failed Obligations
  • Fear of Hopelessness
  • Fear of Success
  • Spiritual / Religious Fears. Now let’s consider each of these in more details.

Money Fears

Both businesses and workers are confronted by this reality. Even medical and health workers in some states in Nigeria have been forced to down tools in this period of emergency because their allowances were not being paid or not being paid on time. Concern over money is a very real concern. The bulk of workers and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) that constitute the bulk of employers have not earned a dime since March when the pandemic was declared. How have they survived so far? By drawing down on their savings, by borrowing or by government hand outs. The last has been more of a fiction than of fact for majority of people. Where there are government provisions for weathering the Covid-19 storm, accessing such resources have become another mountain of hurdles altogether. So people are worried stiff about this fact: “HOW DO WE SURVIVE?”

Job / Career Fears

The final tally is yet to be taken on the effect of Covid-19 on business. However, it is obvious, as seen in the case of Access Bank that many companies have downsized their workforce.

Speaking on her plans to reduce her workforce, the banks managing director had indicated that as much as 75% of their workforce would be pruned. 75%! Furthermore, he indicated that there was going to be pay cut for those who would be left beginning from himself. That’s the reality of the job market occasioned by the unprecedented health scare.

Unemployment, underpayment and job uncertainty are a drain on human psyches already stretched thin by the mishmash of issues that Covid-19 sired. How to cope with those damages with a renewed assault on people by the loss of jobs will be a torrent of mental torture that should be managed properly.

Loss of Social Status

The loss of jobs and income has capacity to exacerbate people’s feeling of self worth. This is where most people’s thresholds tilt and snap. Mental health history is filled with a litany of tragedies that happened because people could not cope with the sense of being seen as incapable of providing for their family, and meeting societal expectations. Why is this an issue? Their inability to cope is hazardous to their mental health and disastrous to their families and dependents.

Truncated or Failed Obligations

Our sense of self worth is tied to what problems we are able to solve. Many people are owing banks, friends and various lenders for mortgage and other personal and business needs. Without income or hope of earning any income, there’s no way they would not default in payment of obligations. This could lead to loss of property used to secure such facilities, homes or other collaterals. Such a situation compounds the defaulters’ self worth.

Hopelessness

Already many feel hopeless because they can’t see where help would come from. This is the time to dig into our spiritual bank. This the time to draw metaphysical support. The Christian fate teaches that “many are the afflictions of the righteous….” The Covid-19 and its chain of consequences confirms that the righteous and unrighteous are equal in their experience of the pandemic and its impacts. Relief comes to those who take succour in the conclusion of the matter in which the Bible says: “…but the Lord delivereth him from them all.”

Fear of Success

I owe this one to my friend Omoniyi Akinsiju. According to him some people have a phobia for success. The fear of success can be in terms of feeling unworthy or in the form of guilt for succeeding when everyone else is failing. Both situations require a change of mind set.

Religious / Spiritual Fears

The fact that the Church was shut for so long has added to the dilemma of the mass of the people. Doubts are rising over the claims of healings and supernatural deliverances obtainable in churches. Publication of the boasts pastors who died of Covid-19 related causes after boasting of their invincibility, worsens the fear of the common people. Where would the folks go to for solution?

The Solution is Within

The things we do, the ways we spend our time, the things that occupy our minds say a lot about us.  They define who we are.  They make us an open book that anyone can read.  We need to remember that if we want to be a certain type of person, we must do things that such a person would do and think the kind of thoughts such a person would think.

Troy Headrick in an article We Are What We Do And What We Think About” in Pointless Overthinking blog

The solution is within us. And everyone needs to help himself. As we saw above, the mental health work force is inadequate for the 264 million current depression cases what more the Covid-19 inspired addition. (The following should not be taken as mental consultation, but an advisory).

Identifying the Problem

  1. We need to identify the fear we fear. Identifying it will lead to better understanding
  2. Talk about it. There are experts that can lead you through talking about the experience you are passing through. Find out counselors on the career you would like to pursue. Such counselors like Media Career Network run by Lekan Otufodurin may be useful to journalists out of job or those planning to leave. Talking about it will help clarify the issues for you.
  3. The next step is to clarify your thoughts. Four key clarifications are likely to emerge:
    • Is this a general problem or personal one?
    • Are their personal inadequacies that impede a solution? What are they? How can they be turned to your advantage?
    • What are the opportunities in the Covid-19 period? Which of them are you suited for?
    • What are your priorities: career or income?
  4. Personal SWOT.
    • Your strength
    • Weakness. Speaking Scripture such as Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me,” will be very helpful in these times and always
    • Opportunities in your strength that can lead to which income and career choices.
    • Threats in things you must never do like borrowing to feed when you have not figured out how to generate more income than you spend. And environmental factors that can never allow you to make progress along the desired lines.
  5. Decide on an Action Plan and stick to it. Perseverance gets more done than undisciplined skills. One action plan that I started lately but which is providing for me and my family is real estate business, which I practice without leaving other endeavours. Interestingly, you don’t have to be a land owner to sell legitimate land and earn an income. Do you know that it also opens an opportunity for you to travel the world without removing from your earnings?

Defeating the Demons of Covid-19

Covid-19 has mounted a three prong warfare on mankind: sadness, anger and fear. These three are demons that mankind has to live with for the foreseeable future, argues Catholic Priest Rev. Jude Ofuani. In this piece he asks humanity to challenge its fears of Covid-19 like she has other pandemics in time past. – Editor

  • By Rev. Jude Ofuani, cmf

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the world is now ravaged by three demons:

  • Sadness
  • Anger
  • Fear

Sadness

Sadness because many have died, because life is no longer normal again, because many are sick, because many are jobless, because many are hungry.

Anger

Because we feel the government is taking us for a ride, that we don’t know what the future holds for us, because suffering has increased.

Fear

There is no outlet for fear, with fear we get paralyzed, we hide, we are confused. In this write up, I will concentrate on fear and how to deal with it.

Addressing Your Fears

The big question is “How can we face our fears?” The answer is simple: Name it! Yes, name your fears! If you name your fear, you will know the enemy and it can be handled. When you name your fear, you are already one step forward in addressing and fighting it. What is your fear?

Amidst all these, we need to be more focused. There is good and there is evil and we are all getting confused and losing it. Our children are out of school for close to three months, our brothers and sisters are losing their jobs. But sometimes, we mistakenly term evil good and call good evil. Remember God’s instruction to our first parents Adam and Eve in the Book of Genesis, God said “You may eat of every tree in the garden, but of the tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, you will not eat, for on the day you eat of it, you will die” (Gen. 2:16-17). But our first parents touched it and ate of the fruit and their eyes were opened and then followed confusion and sin. They wanted to explore, they wanted to be able to define good and evil.

Today in our world men and women, you and I are making wrong explorations, we want to know what is good and what is evil, therefore, we are interchanging positivity and negativity.

What does the future hold for us now? No vaccine, no cure, scientist are still exploring, till now, no positive results. The truth is that, we must learn how to live with this virus. We must face our fears and move on with life with caution.

The future dear friends is not about vaccines and quarantines, our future is bigger than that. When the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles on the day of Pentecost, their lockdown was over; their quarantine came to an end. We can’t keep locking down and closing our doors, for how long? Life must move on but with caution.

Adhering to the preventive measures.

We have learnt to live with so many viruses in the world today that killed more than coronavirus. We did that and are still doing it by facing our fears and defeating it. So we can do the same in this case. People die in car accidents, yet we haven’t stopped traveling or using cars. Airplane crashes kill in large numbers, yet we are still producing and flying them. Again, we haven’t stopped drinking water because so many people have been drowned by water. Life must move on amidst Covid-19. We cannot give up on ourselves. We must defeat our fears.

LESSONS:

The virus has taken us to the reality that we are never in charge of anything. At different points, we wanted to control governments, international politics and policies, businesses and economies, at times we wanted to control humanity and even control our future and the future of others. We thought that everything was in our palms. But you know what friends, this tiny invisible virus has rendered the world powers helpless and powerless.

It is therefore a reminder for us today that we have really lost control; it is a reminder that we are really powerless; it is a reminder dear friends, that power is only but an illusion, because our lives and being are in the hands of God who alone cannot be controlled by world powers. Even the so called atheists or should I call them self-acclaimed atheists if anything like that exists, have no answers to all these.

No doubt, Covid-19 has challenged our belief in a bright future, because we are now short-sighted and narrow sighted and even almost become blind. To have everything is never enough. We strive, we attain and we strive again, reaching ever higher but never high enough. But we must face our fears and defeat it. We would not stop living because of death.
May God calm all our fears and heal our land.
God is above everything.

The Costs of Covid-19

By Ngozi Asoya (Larryhappiday)

The costs of Covid-19 Pandemic isn’t that the world economies are collapsing: they’ll be rebuilt. Neither is it the number of unemployed: new jobs would emerge. It’s not the burgeoning of tyrannical rules and the subversion of democracies, serious, as it is, it is the shock that beyond all the famed progress of man, he essentially has remained a beast at core.

Industrialization Killed Civilization

Civilization is an ideal that died on the alter of industrial progress. Whereas man remained under the illusion that civilization was a consort to industrialization, it is a sad fact that Covid-19 has revealed the underbelly of an ulcer that has been papered over by nations for a long time. In so doing, notions of human progress have shrunken into caricatures of what we thought they were.

This sunken look image by Private Eye epitomizes the forlorn look of modernity in the face of life in the Pandemic

Jobs have been lost. We know. Uncertainties abound…they always have. The question is: what had man learnt from similar situations in the past? How has man chosen to learn?

Inequities are as old as mankind. The humanising impact of pandemics have hardly changed how societies organise for their poor, their sick and orphaned. They have remained at the receiving end of history. So perhaps, it is possible to start measuring progress post-Covid19 by how much equity the underprivileged begin to get for their disproportionate contributions to human progress.

It would seem that the more economic prosperity came, the less labour and poverty amelioration became a concern.

Epidemics in History

Epidemics didn’t start with Covid-19. Global pandemics are legendary and abound. SARS, MEI, Ebola, Bubonic Plague, Spanish flu etc. There have been worse epidemics in history, actually. So in a sense, Covid-19 isn’t our worst case situation in human history. In economic terms, we may not be worse off either. A plague about 5,000 BC took place in an area called Hamin Mangha in Eastern China. It wiped out whole villages and communities. Desperate measures were taken and nearly 100 victims were incinerated in man’s pursuit of a solution to the plague, in one instance.

An analysis of the history of the economic costs of epidemics shows an interesting pattern in different areas especially in Europe. I will suggest you read that article by The Economist to see the details. Suffice to say that:

  • Europe emerged from the Black Death pandemic, economically better. Labour costs improved across most parts due to shortage of skilled manpower lost in the 40% population loss during the sickness
  • Rather than have a tanking of economic growth, urbanisation and industrialisation ensued.
  • Development diversified through the different regions with specialisations that encouraged commercial and trading activities.
  • So, pandemics were no economic death sentences. They even spun new technologies as Covid-19 is already doing, with more telecommunications technologies creeping into official transactions. More AI integration will alter the environment of work.

In a previous article, I had observed that tyrannical rule was rising. Consultation was lacking and federal authorities were gradually stealing into regional constitutional responsibilities in the guise of fighting the corona virus.

To see how the battle against Corona Virus is gradually eating our liberties, Check out it here

Cost to Our Humanity

As observed above, I suspect that every ‘progress’ has left humanity less humane. The more ‘progress’ mankind makes, the more her spiritual and fellow feeling suffered. For example, all the progress of the last century has been predicated on abandoning of intimacy with God. It has led to more grossness and debasement of human worth. Suddenly we now hear that man has multiple genders as espoused by otherwise respectable institutions like the BBC. Affinity with roaches and rats are gradually being associated with sexuality and gender. Resources are being expended on espousing bestiality but not humanity. Military budgets are enumerated in trillions all over the world but global spend on improving the quality of life is less than encouraging. According to Aljazeera, “The world’s nations spent a combined $1.9 trillion (1.78 trillion euros) on their militaries in 2019” citing a report from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). Trillions that would have saved more lives.

Grants and aids have stolen economic development from third world leaders who are given these funds as bribes to turn their attention away from the urgent development of economic looting and stultification that the new world order meant. Underdeveloped countries are robbed by France which scrounges off hundreds of billions of dollars off her ‘former’ colonies, which remain in servitude with the the Pact for the Continuation of Colonialism.

And France seats on the seat of moralising forces called the United Nations (UN). The same UN that was born to stop wars has mentally exacerbated wars by harbouring criminality of one nation under developing tens of others through The Pact. Covid-19 will most likely expand this kind of skewed narrative. How?

China through an invidious manipulation of the symbols of modern technology has held the world riveted with tales by moonlight. Rather than explain what went wrong in her laboratories in Wuhan, she’s busy twisting information and getting the World Health Organization (WHO) confused. Whereas the world was meant to believe that there was a health war going on, the same WHO would not accept that all of mankind was making efforts to end the war. She dubiously snubbed Magadascar ‘s Covid-Organics, ostensibly because Africans are not developed enough to be participants in securing a solution for humanity’s problems. Yet, the same Africa has provided energy resources, gold, carbuncle, uranium that fuels Developed world economies.

Until Cuban doctors led Italy’s response to Covid-19 in late March, their statistics on mortality was horrendous. Cuba is Third World. The bulk of the doctors were black or mixed breed. They were heralded when they arrived we are waiting for their enthronization. Will that happen? Never. That will be contrary to the popular tale.

Senegal was also fingered in helping the Chinese get a handle on their Corona Virus crisis. Will Senegal be canonized. You keep dreaming. Rather, those cures or remedies would be stolen and industrially produced. They will then receive WHO approvals and returned to Africa as the world acclaimed cures.

This is the real cost of this war against Covid-19. If this world will not become a humanising world, the conditions that led to George Floyd’s death will continue. In the frenzy of protesting Minneapolis police murder of a black man, we may end up burying the facts. The team that murdered George are replicated all over the USA. They are supported as ‘good people’ who could bear arms in the streets to assault the seat of government of a state without repercussions. These aberrations won’t die until there’s a humanity to our development.

Minority Voices like Biodiversity International kept calling for more balanced development but enough political action was never found

My Hope

I hope for more accommodation of impact assessment of all developments that minority voices are advocating. I hope for more balanced development, not only physically but also psychologically. I hope there will be more mental and psychological assessment of the impact of major world developments.

I hope for a world in which the African can see himself as part of a clan of contributors to human progress, not from slaving on European or American soils but by having an equity in the discussion of human problems from Abuja, Asaba or Casablanca.

I hope for a world in which the African can see himself as part of a clan of contributors to human progress, not from slaving on European or American soils but by having an equity in the discussion of human problems from Abuja, Asaba or Casablanca.

It is my earnest prayer that the conditions that promote equitable dispensation of justice and rewards will emerge from the ashes of this crisis, after all, we have seen that Covid-19 wasn’t a problem of skin colour or race or tribe or religion. At the heart of the affliction, no nuclear weapon was or would be able to wipe out our common worries which are essentially, human worries. Gov. Cuomo of New York State calls them INEQUALITY THAT HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR DECADES. I dare say they have been going on for centuries.

Covid-19 wasn’t a problem of skin colour or race or tribe or religion. At the heart of the affliction, no nuclear weapon was or would be able to wipe out our common worries which are essentially, human worries.

The Good Side of Covid-19

By Charles Chukwuedo Snr, Esq.

Sun Tzu wrote a treatise on strategic warfare

James I will see you next week”

Ngozi not too worry the wine rack is yours to keep. Remember to pick it up when next you are in town.”

“I can’t wait for summer time to lunch my new brand

“I am looking forward to attending Peter’s party.”

Above are some comments uttered by man in his overt belief in himself, a mindset that he’s bestowed with the remote control of life not only to use to navigate the landmines of life but also to walk into tomorrow at will.

Pre Covid-19. Man was entangled and enmeshed in a fully automated process way of living. This made man to believe that so far as he had money then everything and anything was his. Man’s life had become fully automated. From the microwaveable rice, microwaveable oatmeal, microwavable pounded yam to the fast food culture. Everything was fast, man even ate on the move. Everything moved so fast, you were expected to be part of this fast culture, if not they would label you a “yesterday man”. Whilst some people bathed in this bubble (euphoria) of the fully automated era, some of us never fully divorced from our analogue habits.

I make bold to confess that I belong to that category of persons. Till this day I prefer to hand wash some of my clothes. Especially my underwear. No regrets. “He’s old school!” Yes, I concur. The pace at which man ventured into automated processes, one would conclude that we had passed the point of no return. The analogue fellas struggled to fit into the digital era. Automation was the in-thing. In fact, we became notoriously insensitive and self-absorbed. That old cliché, “by the Grace of God”, which we used at the end of our comments, was rendered redundant. Boy o boy! We thought that we had arrived.

Man was cruising at a pace and with such confidence than we had ever seen. Until the ugly face of Covid-19 arrived in our midst.

This monster of a virus has caused mankind enormous pain. In fact, the colossal effect of Covid-19 is felt in all the nooks and crannies of the world. This is a virus that has brought the world to its knees. Covid-19 is man’s common enemy today. A virus that doesn’t discriminate. If only Covid-19 was Minneapolis Police Department, who knows, my brother George Floyd of blessed memory would not have been murdered in such a discriminatory and cold manner. Rest on bro!

Covid-19 has been ruthless. It takes no prisoners. It has not spared anyone. From the hitherto robust and admirable economies of the West to the developing economies of the East, all have been infiltrated by Covid-19. The level of infiltration is of an industrial scale. How to recalibrate such economies is a talk for another day. Covid-19 is our common enemy. Covid-19’s devastating impact on our lives is immeasurable. There has been collective effort, all hands-on deck to arrest this vampire. Its arrest no doubt brings with it the amelioration of the human condition. The good thing is that at least we know the common enemy.

Legendary Chinese strategist Sun Tzu said in his The Art of War in the times when Gautam Buddha was preaching good ways of life in India. If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle. I am glad that Virologists were able to identify this common enemy. Covid-19 it is a virus that is responsible for the unprecedented number of deaths ever witnessed by mankind post 2nd world war.

I’m a great believer that of every situation that seems bad something good usually comes out of it. Covid-19 is not exempted from this believe. Despite Covid-19’s catastrophic effect, it certainly has helped to reset man’s mindset. It’s only a fool that will refuse to learn from this episode. If we do not learn from Covid-19, I wonder when it is that man will learn. I wish to at this stage thank Covid-19 for humbling mankind and for reminding us all that in the quest for survival and to make ends meet, man had forgotten that our existence goes beyond the hustle and bustle of life and incessant chase of material things. The things he must forfeit at death.

Covid-19 has assisted us to rekindle our lost faith, to reset our default setting, which seems like it was set to a fast mode that gave us this false belief that we can now compete with the “I am that I am”. With God. There would always be a grand master. Believe what you want, I will forever defend and advocate for what I believe in. Irrespective of our divide, there is enough love in me to tolerate and accommodate your person. I hope you find it worthy and you manage to accord me the same. Covid-19 whilst causing havoc, made some people who drifted from God to reconnect to God.

All of a sudden, those things that man thought mattered the most, meant nothing. What matters the most now is how to survive Covid-19. We are all praying whilst struggling to squeeze and fit in the moving train called life. Regrettably, some of our brothers and sisters have not survived the brutal rape of Covid-19. They succumbed to the monster, our common enemy: Covid-19. Those of us seated in the moving life train, should never be under the illusion that we are the special ones. I believe that whatever beset a man it is God/Allah’s will.

Our wardrobes, our jewelleries, houses, cars, art works, investments etc, no longer mean anything to us. If you are still carried away by material things, pardon my language; you are probably a mental patient. Covid-19 resurrected and brought home the saying that all is vanity. It certainly assists elevate my Christ-consciousness. Daily announcement of the number of deaths from Covid-19 sent shivers down our spine. At the mention of death many were willing to trade in all they have just to see another day. All of a sudden man became his brother’ keeper, in line with what the great master Jesus Christ preached and taught us.

The focus has shifted from “acquiring to releasing”. Sharing is now the in thing. Many who were detached from reality came down from their high horse. It dawned on man that the rat race we are engulfed in is not the end of the world. Courtesy of Covid-19, families sat together round the table for once. They realised how much they missed those basic simple things, yet potent in the design of our strong family fabric. Parents realised that there was a lot that they did not know about their children, and vice versa. An opportunity to repair the damage presented itself. Some people used the lockdown period to rediscover and reconnect to God. Spiritual rebirth has been on the increase this period. Courtesy of Covid-19.

Man has been forced to reconstruct his priority pyramid. The things that did not matter to us previously now took priority. I remember the day I invested in first aid dual scale digital thermometer that I still use to check my body temperature. Ordinarily, my mind would not go to such. We all raised our health consciousness to another level. Courtesy of Covid-19. Many now check up on their loved ones like we have never done before. Courtesy of Covid-19. Whilst our churches, mosque and synagogues remained shut down in line with government guidelines and directives, rightfully so, man discovered that it is possible for him to connect directly with God. He does not need a man of God or a man of devil to connect to God. Courtesy of Covid-19, men who usually put their favourite sports before their other half, especially football fanatics, started giving their partners the attention they never had. In fact, some women have stock piled attention enough to last them when the football league resumes.

Regrettably side chicks and side cocks have been on the losing end as their dude no longer comes around to see or spend much time as they did hitherto. Courtesy of Covid-19.

In all we have seen the good side of Covid-19. Hopefully, doubting Thomases who did not believe in God or the Supreme Being, who is the creator of the universe and all that is in it including life, even if they believed that the “Big Bang” theory would admit that every effect must have a cause, and all causes have other causes except the primary cause of all causes which is not caused.

I salute the positive effects of Covid-19 on our lives.
Adieu to our brothers and sisters who fought a good fight, regrettably Covid-19 got the better of them.

Covid-19 War: The Coronation of the Girl-Child (A Mother’s Day Tribute)

By Ngozi Asoya
(Larryhappiday)

The Girl-Child has come of age as the top six national leaders in the war against the Covid-19 disease appear to be women.

Corona the crowned virus that broke from China appears to become the diadem on the coronation of women, who are beneficiaries of the Beijing, China Women’s Conference of 1995.

Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, Namibian Prime Minister leads her country’s war against Covid-19

The Girl-Child has come of age as the top six leaders in the war against the Covid-19 disease are women.

Battles mark out Commanders but wars make the Generals. An unexpected team of Generals are emerging from the Covid-19 battle fields with the war over in a few months time, the ladies are gradually breasting the epaulettes and the world awaits the emergence of war-tested women commanders and Generals as Covid-19 pandemic war heroines.

For most nations, fighting Covid-19 has thrown up an unlikely outcome: the following countries led by women have done exceedingly well in handling the pandemic.  They include:

COUNTRIES GOING TO COVID-19 WAR WITH FEMALE GENERALS
1. Germany
2. Taiwan
3. New Zealand
4. Iceland
5. Finland
6. Norway
7. Denmark
8. Namibia and 9. Ethiopia

FOUNDATION OF WOMEN EMPOWERMENT

The path to emergence of the girl child at the corridors of power began many decades ago but accelerated in the 1980’s. In 1985, there was a conference of women in Nairobi, Kenya. That meeting was like a women’s war council. Their mission was to “establish concrete measures to overcome obstacles to achieving the Decade’s goals.” One of those principal goals was to achieve gender equality at the national levels and for promoting women’s participation in peace and development efforts”.

This culminated in sub conferences and the coup de grace in Beijing in 1995, in which 17,000 people participated with 6,000 people representing governments and 4,000 media and another 4,000 representing NGO’s.
The next decade became the women’s epoch with nearly 18 countries experiencing female heads of governments.
It can be said that they succeeded in their desire to attain the following goals enshrined in the scores of declarations:

“Women’s empowerment and their full participation on the basis of equality
in all spheres of society, including participation in the decision-making
process and access to power, are fundamental for the achievement of
equality, development and peace

and

“Equal rights, opportunities and access to resources, equal sharing of
responsibilities for the family by men and women, and a harmonious
partnership between them are critical to their well-being and that of their
families as well as to the consolidation of democracy”

TALK IS CHEAP?

It may be argued that talk is cheap. Running a government is collective action but in a war situation, commanders are made. Generals win the war and live to tell the story, as Winston Churchill once boasted.

How well have these ladies performed in the Covid-19 war? I submit that this covid-19 is a good situation-room to access how well anyone would do in a shooting war. Or how efficiently, they would spend their nation’s resources in the pursuit of a real shooting under a military condition. The situations may vary but there aren’t many studies simulating female commanders with male commanders in real live warfare. So, we can take their leadership dispositions and extrapolate. Fair enough! Now let’s see how some of the amazons performed when it came to fighting Covid-19 war.

Germany

Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor leads the park of female Commanders fighting the Covid-19 war. Picture: The Local.

This country has been led for about fifteen years by a woman. Under Angela Merkel, the German  economy has weathered many storms. The most remarkable, in my view is the successful emergence of a united Germany as the strongest economy in Europe.

Graphic representation of Germany’s battle with Covid-19 showing steady fall after April 17
Figure 1 Total infection and death in Germany.

Now how well did the country perform under this able General? The figures will speak for themselves. Infections by covid-19 in Germany was less than 172,000 for a population of 83million people, with only 7,500 deaths. Other countries like France and Italy with less population (62m and 62m respectively) had higher casualties in infection and deaths. See figure A which shows figures of infections and deaths. See Figure A for report of infections and deaths. As the time of writing, mortality was 1.1%

New Zealand

This country is led by Jacinda Ardern. She has been in power since 2017 as Prime Minister. She also has a lady as the head of the country’s infectious diseases agency. Collectively, they have wrestled the disease and appear to have won the war, if there’s no second wave of infections. So far, the results are heartening and New Zealanders would be appreciative of the victories their country recorded in the covid-19 war. Here are the facts:
Figure B

Fig. B Steady decline of infections in New Zealand beginning from mid April
Figure 2: total infection in New Zealand compared with the top covid infection and death

From the above, it is clear that New Zealand had 1,144 only with twenty (21) only deaths (mainly the old and aged). The country’s population is 4.8million representing 0.3%.

Denmark

Since April 7, the figures have been sliding in Denmark. That was when they had their highest daily infection of about 400. Led by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen since June 2019, she has led a one-party government consisting of the Social Democrats with parliamentary support from other parties and has done resoundingly well against covid-19 disease. Total infection as the time writing was about 10,000 cases with only about 500 deaths. Denmark has a population of 5.8m. Figure C is a graphic portrayal of the country’s continuous victory over the disease since April

Fig C Denmarks remarkable decline in the Covid-19 figures since early April

Namibia

Namibia is one of the two countries in Africa, currently having a female in the top echelon of decision making. The Prime Minister is Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila. She is effectively the leader of her country’s government. Her performance in the area of covid-19 has astounded many. Namibia has had only sixteen (16) infections with eleven (11) recoveries. No deaths yet. The country’s population is 2.7million. Figure D shows Namibia’s surprise Covid-19 report since April.

Fig. D Namibia on the Covid-19 radar

Norway

This country of 5.3m is led by Erna Solberg, who was born in Bergen Norway in February 1961. She has been serving as Norwegian Prime Minister since 2013 and Leader of the Conservative Party since May 2004. Solberg was first elected to be a member of the Storting in 1989 and served as Minister of Local Government and Regional Development in Bondevik’s Second Cabinet from 2001 to 2005. Now she leads the greatest battle of her premiership fighting Covid-19. How has she fared? The graphic below shows a steady decline for an extended length of time giving hope that she may be counted amongst Churchillian generals that will live to write the history of the war. Figure E is Norwegian graph showing how the infection rate declined steadily over one month.

Figure E is Norwegian graph showing steady decline in the figures since early April.

Conclusion

If things continue the way they’re, the girls will win a resounding victory for political and leadership equality based on their masterful handling of the Covid-19 pandemic in their different jurisdictions.
Other countries with females in charge include Taiwan (Republic of China), Ethiopia where the ceremonial president is a woman and Iceland. All those countries show remarkable decline in infections and deaths leading analysts to ask: is Corona, the crowned virus that broke out from China here to coronate the products of the Beijing Women’s Conference? What a coincide!

UPDATE: New Zealand becomes the first country to be free of Covid-19?

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-52961539

As projected in our conclusion above, countries led by a ladies are likely to be the winners in the confrontation with Covid-19. New Zealand has just attained the Level One vigilance stage which is almost a complete stage of restriction. Let’s watch how the other five return in the race. Congratulations to Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister and her team.
